The Girls Varsity Soccer team resumed play Wednesday night at Showalter field after a two week hiatus. The Wildcats hosted the Edgewater Eagles who entered the evening with a 4-3 record. WPHS got off to a quick start with goals by senior Ellie Moreno in the 6th and 14th minute. Senior Iman Keen, who had been sidelined for several weeks due to an injury, returned to field for the Wildcats. Keen made her presence known in the 23rd minute when she volleyed a ball in the Eagles’ goal with authority. The offensive story of the evening was undoubtedly junior Joelle Hardy. Hardy came off the bench in the later part of the first half and amassed three goals in a nine minute time span, scoring in the 29th, 36th, and 38th minute. All three goals were assisted by junior Karina Groff. Hardy would add a 4th goal in the 50th minute ending the match in accordance with FHSSA’s mercy rule. Senior Sarah Houston also scored for Winter Park. The Wildcats defense, led by senior Alex Granville, neutralized a dangerous Eagles scoring attack which featured junior forward Kailey Scott. Winter Park held Edgewater to three shots on goal during the match. The Wildcats welcomed back sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Fedrerici who had been recovering from an injury. Federici had a clutch save in the 43rd minute denying a hard hit strike from forward Kailey Scott, securing a clean sheet for the match. The Wildcats will be hosting a college showcase this weekend at Showalter field. Twelve high school programs from throughout Florida will take part in this event. WPHS plays at 4:00 pm on Friday and at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm on Saturday.
