The Wildcats faced the Lake Nona Lions Wednesday night in the District 5 semi-final game. Through the first 30 minutes of the match, it appeared the game might be a repeat of the regular season contest between the two teams. In regular season match, Winter Park had multiple scoring opportunities but only score once. On this night senior Ellie Moreno broke the scoring ice for the Wildcats with a strike in the 31st minute. Winter Park went into half-time up 1-0. Lake Nona, led by stand out player and team captain Zoe Frenier, were playing a very defensive oriented match. In the second half, Head Coach Jimmy Angeles had the Wildcats focus on possessing the ball with the intent of drawing Lake Nona out of their defensive stance. The tactical decision paid off in the 61st minute when senior Sarah Dennis scored the first of a flurry of goals by the Wildcats in the second half. Dennis’ goal was followed up by two strikes by senior Ansley Fraiser in the 66th and 73rd minute. Moreno would score the Wilcats’ 5th goal of the night in the 79th minute. The Wildcats’ defense, anchored by sophomore Tess Moses, senior Alex Granville, and junior Regan Staudt, held Lake Nona to three shots on goal during the match. The victory over Lake Nona clinched the Wildcats a berth in the regional tournament and advanced Winter Park to the District 5 championship match.
